Ruth Greenspan Ball and Elke U. Weber, in honor of Earth Day, discuss how people need to think of climate change in both big and small ways. Fighting climate change goes beyond just global and national changes, it needs to be a part of our everyday lives. Researchers estimate that 40% of electric use and carbon emissions in the United States come from individual and household use. The ideas for small scale change are here, such as keycards that activate electricity in hotel rooms. The continued pursuit and activation of these ideas is key.

New Research from Columbia Business School Makes Recommendations on How Regulators Should Intervene—If At All

On July 1, Damon Phillips, the James P. Gorman Professor of Business, will assume the role of co-director of Columbia Business School's Tamer Center for Social Enterprise. Professor Phillips is preceded in the role by Professor Ray Fisman, who has contributed significantly to the School’s social enterprise efforts for several years. Professor Phillips will serve alongside Bruce Usher, Executive in Residence and adjunct professor of finance and economics.

The Private Equity Program at Columbia Business School will hold its next Alumni Networking Event and Panel on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. The panel discussion will focus on Global Markets and Private Equity.

Fabrizio Ferri, the Regina Pitaro Associate Professor of Business and Accounting at Columbia Business School, has won the 2015 Best Paper Award from the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware. 

Older adults have very different money priorities than younger members of their families. Rather than focusing on accruing wealth, older adults should strive to spend less and to plan their estate. A large concern when it comes to these activities is cognitive decline. Eric Johnson, Columbia Business School, says that while cognitive challenges are present in older age, years of collected wisdom can counteract this decline.

On Friday, February 27, the Real Estate Association spent the afternoon with the Related Companies, listening to insights from executives and touring existing properties and developments. The group of over 20 MBA students first toured the Shops at Columbus Circle at Time Warner Center, where the leasing manager, Lauren Hammer, gave an overview of the tenant mix and shared some interesting facts about the property.  

Congratulations to the Columbia students who participated in the 15th Annual Wharton Private Equity competition, Friday February 20, 2015. Two first year MBA teams competed and both teams finished in the top 3 (out of 25 teams from 19 schools from around the world.). This year the teams presented a case on the possible leveraged buyout of American Eagle Outfitters.

CJEB recently held its 10th annual lecture on Japanese politics with Professor Gerald Curtis, CJEB's core faculty member and Burgess Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. NEW YORK—Columbia Business School today announced the creation of the Tamer Center for Social Enterprise. The new center, made possible through a transformative endowment gift from Sandra and Tony Tamer will help develop a new generation of business leaders that understand how management can contribute to, enhance, and impact society and the environment. Additionally, it will serve as the educational, curricular, research, and strategic hub of all social entrepreneurship activities at Columbia.

Practice and experience that come with age may offset much of the adverse impact from slipping brainpower, say researchers at the Columbia Business School. They acknowledge inevitable cognitive decline. But they conclude that much of its effect can be countered in later life if problems and decisions remain familiar.
