Given explosive growth in the ICO market, new research highlights the value of disclosure in this global market NEW YORK – With around $13billion raised through initial coin offerings (ICOs) between April 2014 to May 2018, across 50+ countries and by over 650 issuers, the question of investor protection is now urgent. The global market continues to grow, typically with over 100 new ICOs a month, however, some ICOs experience falls of -75% or more within a few months of the issue date.

Congratulations to Professors Urooj Khan and Shiva Rajgopal for receiving the 2018 Notable Contribution to Accounting Literature Award for their study titled, “Do the FASB’s standards add shareholder value?” 

Professors Urooj Khan and Shiva Rajgopal were awarded American Accounting Association’s 2018 FARS Best Paper Award for their study, “Do the FASB’s standards add shareholder value?” The American Accounting Association makes this award to a financial accounting and reporting paper published within the past five years that is judged to best reflect the tradition of academic scholarship and be of relevance to problems facing the accounting profession and standard setters.

Prof. Fabrizio Ferri, and his co-author Robert Gox, have had the honor of publishing a book chapter, "Executive Compensation, Corporate Governance, and Say on Pay," in the prestigious Foundations and Trends in Accounting, Vol. 12, Issue 1.

Ethan Rouen was awarded the American Accounting Association Financial Accounting and Reporting Section Best Dissertation Award for 2018 for "Rethinking Measurement of Pay Disparity and its Relation to Firm Performance." Ethan completed his Ph.D. at Columbia in 2017 and is now an assistant professor at Harvard Business School.

Columbia Business School was saddened to learn of the passing of Washington SyCip ’43, a member of the School’s Board of Overseers for over two decades and one of its most prominent alumni in Asia. 

Yuan Zou is the winner of the 2017 PhD Alumni Accounting Award, an award given by a committee of Columbia PhD Alumni to recognize the most promising PhD student in accounting. Yuan works on examining the consequences of more transparent disclosure on executive compensation packages, and the role of passive investors in reshaping the capital markets.

At corporate gathering, dean shares updates on faculty research, academic initiatives, and the successful capital campaign for the new Manhattanville campus.  

Prof. Stephen Penman and CBS graduate student Erik Johannesson have been awarded the 2016 Abacus Best Manuscript Award. Penman’s paper is titled “Valuation: Accounting for Risk and the Expected Return.” The Johannesson paper (joint with James Ohlson) is ’“Equity Value as a Function of (eps1, eps2, dps1, bvps, beta): Concepts and Realities.”
